Malteenoes Sports Club’s (MSC) Deon Ferrier scored 105, while GCC’s Wasim Haslim followed up his first innings century with an attacking 75 yesterday as MSC took first innings points from GCC in their drawn second round two-day Carib Beer/Heroes Cup first division cricket match at DCC.
In the other match yesterday, Alex Culley left the venue before batting in a GDF team already playing with two players short resulting in the soldiers being dismissed for 125-7 in their second innings against Police who took first innings points in the drawn contest at Eve Leary.
Police resumed the final day on 143-8 replying to GDF’s 198-8 innings closed and were dismissed for 220 with Vishal Jaigobin hitting four fours and two sixes in 56 and former Essequibo inter county pacer Trevor Benn striking two fours and two sixes in 32.
Shemroy Barrington (3-72), Ameer Khan (3-48) and Randy Lindore (3-51) bowled well for the Army.
Paul Castello (6) and Barrington (63) again gave GDF a good start before Castello was removed by Benn at 35-1, while Jaigobin, bowling leg-spin, sent back national under-19 player Kevin Boodie (8), Marcus Watkins (2) and Barrington as three wickets tumbled for seven runs and GDF slipped to 81-4.
After Randy Lindore (13) lofted 18-year-old leg-spinner Parnell London to mid-off at 101-5, the innings ended quickly as Jaigobin finished with 3-28 and London 3-17.
Set 104 to win from a minimum of 11 overs, Police were 27-2 off four overs with Troy Benn on 16 when bad light stopped play. Boodie took 2-18.
In Queenstown, MSC, replying to GCC’s 218 began the day on 226-7 and quickly lost Steven Sankar for three before Ferrier, who began the day on 86, was bowled by pacer Kevin Ogle for 105 decorated with nine fours and four sixes.
MSC declared at lunch at 258-9 with a lead of 40 as left-arm spinner Raj Nanan had 5-43 and Ogle 2-59.
GCC then surprisingly declared 32 minutes before the scheduled close at 244-8, just six runs away from an additional batting point.
By the time play ended in fading light, GCC had collected two more bowling points due to a combination of good bowling and impetuous stroke-play from MSC who struggled to 24-4 off nine overs after being set 204 to win from a minimum of seven overs.
Earlier, the left-handed Haslim fell 25 short of scoring centuries in both innings when he was caught and bowled by Ferrier at 117-2 after GCC’s Captain Robin Bacchus (21) was leg before to Kellon Carmichael at 47-1.
Haslim’s 75 included 12 fours and two sixes while Ricardo Jaggernauth (32) and Jeetendra Sookdeo (38) and Treon Forde (27*) were also among the runs for the Bourda boys as Carmichael had 3-53 and got support from leg-spinner Sankar 2-46 and Danny Narayan 2-11.
Shaquille Williams (7) hit Nanan for a six before lofting a catch to deep mid-wicket in the first over to leave MSC on 8-1. Carmichael (3) was then trapped leg before to Nanan at 10-2.
Carlos LaRose was leg before and Jamal Norton was taken at slip for ducks in the fourth over bowled by part-time seamer Haslim and all of a sudden MSC were wobbling on the ropes at 10-4.
Skipper Orin Forde who hit two fours in 10 and Narayan (3*) ensured that no more damage was done as Nanan finished with 2-12 and match figures of 7-55 and Haslim had 2-8.
