Despite an undefeated Jairam and a valiant effort from Ulric Brathwaite Guyana lost to Suriname 3-1 in a historic Draughts tournament last weekend in Paramaribo, Suriname.
The four-match series began on Saturday with an emphatic win for Guyana beating the Surinamese 7-5 at the Kamal Dewarker Football Stadium.
The winning trophy was donated by the Caribbean Centre, while Member of parliament Miss Martha Warso also donated a trophy to the Guyanese on behalf of the Government of Suriname.
She also donated some useful documents to aid and guide beginners of the game, especially children.
On Saturday evening the second game was played at the Rangeet Boys Pavilion with the hosts winning 7-5.
On Sunday the third game was played at the Leltdorp Club. Again Suriname won 7-5 before crushing Guyana 11-1 in the final match at the DV Victoria Club. Jairam was the only player unbeaten as his draw earned Guyana its only point.
On Monday evening the Guyanese were invited for an informal game and Social at the SDV Welgedacht Club. In the friendly game, Guyana lost to Suriname 8-4. At a simple ceremony the President of Welgedacht Club presented the President of the Guyana Draughts
Association (GDA) with a trophy.
The GDA President expressed gratitude to the organizers and officials in Suriname for their hospitality and friendly relationship which has been built over the few days there and a number of Clubs has shown an interest in visiting Guyana for return matches.
Draughts is considered the second most popular game after Football in Suriname and this was the first time that the Guyanese were playing with the clock and abiding with International Draughts rules.
The games were played on the 100 square boards; a new format of the game and Raj Narine (Vice President PanAm games) at a special meeting with the Guyanese encouraged the GDA President to register Guyana through the Ministry of Sports so Guyana can move to greater lengths in the game which is popular at the International level in most countries.
The GDA would like to thank Guyoil, Federal Management Systems, Keishar’s, Courts, Brans Security Services, Nalico/Nafico and the New Bel Air Gas Station for their contributions towards the trip.
LISTEN HOW JAGDEO WILL MAKE ALL GUYANESE RICH!!!
