The Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) last evening, at the Georgetown Club, announced that for the first time since 2001,it is making the launch of the Business Awards public. The GCCI has also extended its award category to include innovation and most promising new business.
According to Komal Ramnauth, President of GCCI, this launching is very significant since it follows directly on the heel of this year’s launch of the Ministry of Tourism, Commerce and Industry’s Trade and Business Exposition, GUYEXPO.
He stated that it is mere coincidence that these events should occur one day apart, but significantly so, because of the common thread which runs through both events. It was noted that most of these businesses which are exhibiting at GUYEXPO are members of the private sector body.
“This is noteworthy since the awards are presented mainly to private sector entrepreneurs and businesses, in the small, medium and large scale categories respectively. These same categories are found amongst the exhibitors at GUYEXPO,” he added.
Ramnauth emphasised that GUYEXPO is propelled by Government and the public sector but the private sector is a beneficiary which gives impetus to the proverbial saying that, “the private sector is the engine of growth.”
The GCCI Awards behooves the private sector to ensure that whatever products and services that are provided must be of high quality and standard. The 11 categories will be judged on standards, performance and quality.
For the first time the Business of the Year award has been divided into two to accommodate Small and Medium Scale, and large Scale businesses. The Business of the Year award in the Small to Medium Scale category focuses on entities with below 50 employees and good overall business performance.
Meanwhile the Business of the Year award in the large scale category will focus on businesses with over 50 employees and also good overall performance.
The other categories include Young Business Executive, Public Service Award for Excellence, Corporate Citizenship Award, Lifetime Achievement Award, GCCI Long Service Award, Most Promising New Business, Innovation, The Chamber Award and the GCCI President’s Award.
It was revealed that interested persons can uplift forms and sign up. The submission date in November 4 and the announcement date of awardees is December 9. The forms printed this year are comprehensive and are easy to fill out.
