Staffers are being trained and infrastructural works being finished as the completion date of the first dialysis centre at the Georgetown Hospital draws near.
Health Minister Dr Leslie Ramsammy yesterday told Kaieteur News that works are expected to finish by monthend.
The minister explained that all the parties involved had met to discuss several areas that needed addressing. He revealed that his ministry is working with a Canadian Charity Group to set up the Dialysis Centre at the Georgetown Public Hospital and another on the East Coast of Demerara.
A nephrologist has been hired from India and is assisting with developments.
A nephrologist is a physician who has been trained in the diagnosis and management of kidney disease. The only nephrologist Guyana has is Dr Roger Luncheon, and he isn’t practicing.
The Minister stated that he does not know how much the cost of the treatment would be, but posited that it would be at a much more affordable cost than what currently exists.
He added that last year Government spent some $10M for the support of people getting dialysis treatment.
“With this new venture we are hoping that the Ministry will be able to help more people…if we could lower the price, definitely more people would be able to benefit from the service.”
Only last week another low cost dialysis centre was opened at Annandale, East Coast Demerara. The Doobay Renal Centre is currently charging patients $15,000 per session.
