Police in Suriname say that eight persons including 6 Guyanese nationals and one Jamaican traveling illegally to Suriname were arrested Wednesday afternoon after a quantity of cocaine was discovered in the boat in which they were travelling. The remaining suspect is a Surinamese national.
Police spokesman Inspector Humphrey Naarden, in an invited comment, said that around 3.30 pm local time a joint-patrol of the police and Surinamese army spotted a speedboat crossing the Corentyne River from Guyana to the Dutch-speaking republic.
Since the party of eight including 3 women, were acting suspiciously, a search was conducted in the boat and 14 parcels, of what was later confirmed to be cocaine, were discovered.
“The passengers were acting suspiciously when they noticed the patrol boat and during the search the officers discovered 14 parcels containing a white powder. The passengers and the motorist were arrested and after being arraigned before an assistant prosecutor in the Nickerie District remanded to prison”, said Inspector Naarden.
The investigation has been turned over to the Anti-Narcotics Squad of the Suriname Police Force.
There is a current trend in which more and more criminals are moving cocaine from Guyana by road and boat to Suriname in a bid to get the drug to the European market. In the past couple of months numerous suspects have been caught trying to move cocaine and marijuana from Guyana into Suriname.
