Maryville captured the Arthur Joseph Memorial U-19 40 over cricket title when they defeated Blenheim United by four wickets in the final at Enterprise in Leguan last Sunday.
Blenheim United won the toss and elected to bat first in front of a fair size crowd and scored 116 before they were bowled out in the 23rd over in a match which was reduced to 35 over due to rain.
Mahindra Bhagwandin 28 (2×6,4×4) and Taran Hardeo 18 (1×6,2×4) were their leading run getters as off spinner Paul Debideen, who bowled with good control, captured 3-13 off 5.2 overs, while medium pacers Aseeb Khan and Sunil Persaud picked up two wickets each.
Maryville in their turn at the crease lost a few quick wickets before Saif Jairaj, who top scored with 34 (2×6,2×4) and Aseeb Khan 33 (2×6,4×4) joined forces and added 86 runs for the fifth wicket stand. When they were both dismissed in quick succession, victory was almost assured with only ten runs required.
Maryville eventually won the game in 15.5 overs as they finished on 117-6. Medium pacers Rajendra Persaud and Bhagwandin were the pick of the bowlers for Blenheim with 3 and 2 wickets respectively.
Both finalist received trophies while Aseeb Khan was given the man of the match award.
Tulsieram Premnauth and Shivendra Hemraj were the competition’s leading batmen, while Bhagwandin and Premnauth were the leading wicket takers. The players and officials from all the teams that took part in the competition (Blenheim United, Maryville and Rebels) received medals.
Chairman of the Leguan cricket committee Virendra Chintamanie thanked the sponsors and congratulated the winners. He also said that another competition which will be funded by the said sponsor will start shortly. The tournament was sponsored by the Joseph family and played in memory of the late Arthur Joseph who was a former cricketer in Leguan. (Zaheer Mohamed)
