The controversy that erupted following the conclusion of the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) seemed not to have affected the planned itinerary of the executives of the Essequibo Cricket Board (ECB) and that organization is forging ahead with plans to stage the 50 overs Cricket Festival which gets underway tomorrow morning with four matches.
Eight teams will battle for honours with defending champions South Essequibo commencing the journey to retain their title when they oppose Leguan at the Johanna Cecilia Ground. North Essequibo will oppose Wakenaam on the latter team’s Community Centre Ground. Over at the Castle Ground, Bartica will enjoy a home advantage over Pomeroon, while Central Essequibo and East Bank will battle at the Central Community Centre Ground.
Play continues on Friday with both matches dependent on the winners of Thursday’s encounter opposing each other in semi-final affairs, while the winners of the two semi-finals will battle for championship honours on Saturday next.
Meanwhile, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Guyana Beverages Inc, Mr. Robert Selman, has acquiesced to a sizeable sponsorship package to offset the expenses and ensure a successful and qualitative tournament.
This level of support dates back to eight years ago when the beverage company commenced the relationship. Yesterday afternoon, at the Diamond EBD head office of his organization Mr. Selman once again handed over the sponsorship package to the tune of 1.5 million dollars toward a successful event. The beverage boss was joined by his Marketing Manager Shamieza Yadram and other members of staff while President of the Essequibo Cricket Board (ECB), Sheik Ahmad collected the donation on behalf of his entity.
Mr. Selman expressed delight at once again being afforded an opportunity to extend such chivalry in support of the development of the Essequibo cricketers. He said that such support is made possible through the unswerving support rendered to his company by residents of Essequibo and other parts of the country. The beverage boss also said that he was impressed by the strides made by the executives of the ECB which has been the catalyst for the support rendered by his organization over the years. “I am convinced that the support rendered by my company is money well spent as the young cricketers are the eventual beneficiaries,” exhorted Mr. Selman.
While accepting the package, Mr. Ahmad said that it was the best day for members of his Board and all of the cricketers in that Region when their request received affirmation. “Over the years my executives have been working diligently to organize tournaments and generally produce great cricketers and the Guyana Beverages Inc have been in the forefront in supporting our programmes and initiatives,” said Mr. Ahmad.
Eighty eight cricketers would be involved in the tournament and Mr. Ahmad said that the tournament is extremely important since it is here the selectors will garner their inter-county representatives. The finals of the competition will be contested under floodlights at the Wakenaam Community Centre Ground and the winning team carts off one hundred thousand dollars.
