Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) has issued disconnection warnings to customers of Craig, East Bank Demerara, who were found engaging in wanton wastage which the company says significantly hampers the delivery of normal service to the community.
According to GWI’s Divisional Operations Manager, East Bank Demerara, Christine Thompson, “we responded to several complaints about low water pressure in Craig and upon investigation found in excess of eleven (11) pipes left untended by residents.”
She further stated that “despite residents receiving a 24-hour supply of water, pipes remained opened all day.”
“These residents failed to comprehend the inconvenience they inflicted on customers at the far end of the system,” Thompson stated, and added “because of this wastage, customers located further down the distribution system will experience low pressure or no water supply.”
To conserve on electrical energy, most communities are served through sectional delivery in which water is supplied during peak hours when customers conduct most of their domestic chores. However, due to the large area served by the distribution system, of which Craig forms a part, GWI is required to distribute on a 24-hour basis to avoid poor service at the farther end of the system.
“Despite service being readily available, many taps remained opened while customers were not at home,” stated Thompson, “this created a tremendous strain on our system which resulted in numerous complaints about inadequate water supply from customers residing at the extreme end of the system.”
“GWI will prosecute any customer who engages in wastage,” says GWI’s Chief Executive (a.g.), Nigel Niles, “according to the Water and Sewerage Act 2002, customers can be sentenced to three (3) months in jail or made to pay a fine between G$15,000 – G$50, 000 if found guilty.”
“We have collected images of the wastage found in Craig,” stated the Chief Executive, “these can be used as evidence should these customers continue to disregard our warnings. Wastage by any customer is unacceptable and GWI has initiated a no-nonsense approach for delinquent customers.”
