Konawaruk double murder…
Police were up to yesterday still hunting for several suspects in the brutal murder of dredge operator Daniel Higgins and his son at their White Water Backdam, Konawaruk mining camp.
An official said that investigators are trying to locate “about half a dozen men,” in connection with the brutal killing, which was apparently prompted by greed.
Kaieteur News was told that the suspects are persons that the elder Higgins had recently recruited to work on his claim.
“The motive seems to be greed. These guys were recently recruited,” a source said. “They did not know anything about mining. They saw a little ‘wash-down’ (gold) and began to make demands.”
Police have the names of some of the suspects.
A police release said that the victims were mining at around 10:45 hrs last Tuesday when a man approached and shot the elder Higgins about his body, while another man chopped his 22-year-old son to the neck.
The body of Daniel Higgins (Sr.) was found buried in a mining pit.
Kaieteur News understands that one of the killers forced the excavator operator at gunpoint to bury the body. An official said that the killers escaped with a small quantity of raw gold and cash.
Police who went to the area to conduct investigations returned to the city with the bodies yesterday.
From reports reaching this newspaper, the killers struck when most of the more seasoned crewmen were away from camp. Some had reportedly returned to the city for a wedding.
Police are questioning some of the crew who allegedly witnessed the killing.
There have been several recent robberies and murders in the gold-rich interior and a senior police official has cautioned the owners of mining claims to screen persons seeking employment.
