The father and son who were slain at a Konawaruk mining camp were apparently murdered by some of their colleagues and not by bandits as was first reported.
A police official disclosed that investigators have the names of some of the suspects in the brutal killings, but have not yet located the individuals. The official confirmed that the individuals that police are trying to locate are from the mining camp. However, the source said that police are still trying to glean further information about the double-murder.
Daniel Higgins Sr., 48, was shot at least two times while his 22-year-old son, Daniel Jr., was hacked to death in the Konawaruk-Whitewater area on Wednesday.
Kaieteur News understands that the senior Higgins owned and operated a dredge and excavator.
Reports state that the elder Higgins was in a mining pit when one of the attackers shot him in the back. His son was reportedly hacked to death when he attempted to save his father.
There are unconfirmed reports that one of the men was buried by persons in the area.
The two resided at Lot 55 Main Street, Ann’s Grove, East Coast Demerara. Relatives said that they were still to confirm the circumstances that led to the men being killed.
A female relative said that the family received the news just after lunch on Thursday.
She opined that the incident might have happened the day before.
This newspaper was told that the father and son had left their home for the location last Tuesday. According to the woman, the two victims had no known enemies and she could not say what prompted the savage attack.
There have been over 20 murders this year in ‘E’ and ‘F’ Division this year, with most of them stemming from disputes.
