In an effort to ensure that the tournament is played at a standard befitting the magnitude of the sponsorship and one that will be pleasing to fans, Fruta Conquerors Football Club made a decision to postpone the opening of the Milo under 23 Competition from yesterday to next Friday (August 26).
According to a release from the club, the decision was taken to facilitate the thorough preparation of teams which will ensure a high level of competitiveness and the necessary time for all stakeholders to endorse the tournament.
The release added that three games will be played on opening day featuring Beacon versus Police Football Club at 17:00 hrs and that will be followed by the clash between Flamingo and the Guyana Defence Force at
19:00 hrs, while Santos engages Sunburst Camptown at 21:00 hrs in the feature match. All games will be played at the Tucville Football Ground with matches scheduled to continue on Saturday and Sunday.
Over $1million is being expended in the tournament which carries a first prize of $100,000, runner-up-$50,000, 3rd place-$30,000 and 4th place-$20,000.
Prizes will also be awarded to outstanding individual performers.
Four groups comprising a total of 16 teams have been divided equally with the top two after the round robin playoffs advancing to the knock out phase.
Group A consists of Fruta Conquerors, Flamingo, Guyana Defence Force and University of Guyana; Group B-Sunburst Camptown, Santos, Black Pearl and Riddim Squad; Group C- Pele, Northern Rangers, Police and Beacons, while Group D consist of Western Tigers, Charlestown United, Alpha United and GFC.
