Current National Women’s Singles Champion, Trenace Lowe, lost the Women’s Under-21 title Tuesday night at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall after giving up a two-set lead to the Dominican Republic’s Eva Brito in a stunning twist of fortunes.
Lowe placed Guyana on the brink of winning its first mainstream title of the 2011 Caribbean and Regional Table Tennis Federation (CRTTF) Senior Championships only to give up five points in a stretch in the third set and losing in the last two sets.
Lowe played superbly in the first two sets with a consistent and smooth flow of big serves, drives and counter-loops that encouraged supporters at the venue to rally behind the athlete. She was up 10-7 in third set when Brito rallied with unanswered serves.
Brito equalled the scores at 10 points in the third set then went on to win the set 12-10 which was the lifeline she needed. Lowe had won the first two sets 12-10 and 11-9 before Brito clinched her rebirth in the third set. She closed out Lowe 11-5, 11-5 for the title.
Lowe qualified on top of her group and as a result, played Michelle John, who Brito had defeated in the other group, in the semi-final. Lowe defeated John 11-9, 6-11, 8-11, 11-9 and 11-4 to place her name in the title game. Brito defeated team-mate, Kircia Diaz, who Lowe had beaten, in what was another well-contested semi 4-11, 11-2, 11-4, 9-11 and 11-5.
Jamaica’s Simon Tomlinson beat Guyana’s Nigel Bryan 4-11, 11-9, 5-11, 11-9 and 11-4 to reach last night’s final where he lost 2-11, 9-11 and 6-11 to Dominican Republic’s Samuel Galvez who had defeated St. Lucia’s Omarie Ferdinand 3-1 in the other semi-final.
Before the intense U-21 semi-final and final, Guyana’s Desiree Lancaster had won a round-robin playoff in the Veteran’s Over-45 competition. Lancaster won the title 7-11, 11-13, 14-12, 11-8 and 12-10 against Guadeloupe’s Corinne Vaillant. Both Lancaster and Vaillant had defeated the other two competitors, Trinidad’s Verna Edwards and Barbados’ Margaret Felix.
Guyana’s Colin France gave Guyana its second medal in the Veterans’ category when he placed second after losing in the Men’s Over-45 final Tuesday night. Cuba’s, Raul Betancourt, who has accompanied the Dominican Republic as their coach, defeated France 6-11, 5-11, 11-6, 11-10 and 11-4 in the final.
