Leon ‘Hurry up’ Moore set to make grand return to fistic duties
Guyana’s world title hope, Leon ‘Hurry up’ Moore is scheduled to resume his boxing career when he engages an opponent, still to be named, on September 10 next.
Kaieteur Sport spoke with Bob Duffy, the Director of Boxing operations of Boxing 360, the management group piloting Moore’s boxing affairs, and he revealed that the 31 years old Guyanese southpaw bantamweight pugilist will certainly be in action after a short layoff from fistic duties.
Mr. Duffy said that he is awaiting the name of Moore’s opponent which should be forthcoming shortly. The fight is slated for the Aviator, Flatbush Avenue, Brooklyn NY. Mr. Duffy further revealed that Moore received an offer just last month to engage American, Ronny Gonsalves in the 126lbs class but was forced to turn it down because his management team felt that the time allotted for preparations was inadequate.
“We received the offer a mere 10 days before the fight and felt that accepting it would have been nothing short of ludicrous,” explained Mr. Duffy.
Meanwhile, Kaieteur Sport caught up with Moore moments after he had completed a hectic workout at the Gleason’s Boxing gym, Brooklyn NY. He said that he was working diligently to whip himself into an acceptable shape. Moore, rated at No 3 by the World Boxing Council (WBC) in the super bantamweight division said that he is not worried with a layoff of more than 5 months. He said that he had been in engaged in light training and now that a fight has been confirmed, is currently increasing the workload. He is under the tutelage of former local jnr/welterweight pugilist, Dillon Carew.
Moore joined his compatriot, Lennox Allen in the Boxing 360 stable and has so far registered a unanimous six-round decision victory over veteran Felipe Almanza (18-23-4, 9 KOs), earlier in the year. The 31-year-old southpaw sports a record of 28-2, 22 Kos and is the reigning PABA and WBC CABOFE super bantamweight champion, as well as the former NABA, Guyanese and CABOFE bantamweight titlist.
