Dear Editor,
I refer to a Kaieteur News article (14/08/11)”Disgraceful——Animal left to rot in police Compound,” and I am wondering who is putting the right shoe on the left foot. Too much responsibility is placed on the shoulders of the police and the Government seems to have their responsibilities in all the wrong places.
Firstly, the catching of stray animals should be place under the Ministry of Agriculture, which is the Authority to deal with animals and who should now assume full responsibility for the care and maintenance of the animals and who should employ a catching unit with the right training and equipment. All animals on the loose are not strays after all.
Secondly, the proper animal carriers should be used to transport these animals and not have them hauled into a 4X4 truck as seen a few months ago in another newspaper. Thirdly, captured animals should be examined and treated by a veterinarian for any disease(s) for which the costs should be billed to the owner or be included in the Auction prices. Fourthly, animals not suitable for rearing for whatever purpose should be put to sleep using the right methods.
Fifthly, all unclaimed animals like horses and donkeys can be placed in a different holding pen/paddock, for future sale/use. Also, we can adopt a programme like the one used in Antigua where a Donkey Sanctuary was established as a result of the many unclaimed animals.
This site has become a Tourist attraction with tour operators having to ferry tourists daily to this location where they pay to play with these animals, earning value added dollars.
The old Government structure needs to be dismantled to pave the way for a more efficient structure that addresses the issues in the right manner. The Minister of Home Affairs needs to relieve the police of these duties so that they can concentrate on crime; those animals haven’t committed any crime.
