Regional U-19 one-day cricket (4th round)
Barbados hammered host Guyana by eight wickets at the Blairmont ground in West Berbice yesterday to maintain their unbeaten record in this year’s regional one-day cricket competition heading into tomorrow’s final round.
In sunny conditions the Guyanese disappointed a fair size crowd with a woeful batting performance on a slow track to be all out for 74 in 30.3 overs in a game reduced to 48 overs per side due to a late start.
Fast bowling all-rounder Clinton Pestano top-scored with 20 as off-spinner Chaim Holder captured 4-27 for Barbados who replied with 75-2 after Skipper and Test player Kraigg Braithwaite was run out for 29 at 51-1.
Shane Parris retired hurt due to illness but Braithwaite, whose only two centuries in his regional under-19 cricket career which began in 2008 were scored against Guyana, again looked set against the South Americans who were asked to field first.
Braithwaite fell minutes before Lunch which was taken with the Bajans on 51-1 with Kyle Hope on nine and talented let-hander Anthony Alleyne yet to score.
After the interval Hope (14) went back and was trapped leg before to West Indies under-19 off-spinner Amir Khan at 59-2 but that was to be Guyana’s final success as the Bajans formalized their fourth consecutive victory.
After the 90-minute drive from Georgetown to Guyana’s second largest county, Guyana, with one of its weakest batting sides in the 43-year history of Regional under-19 cricket, lost both of their openers with the score on eight when Jomal LaFleur was magnificently taken at second slip by Neil Browne off Kyle Mayers for six and Dominique Rikhi was removed by Ravindra Persaud for three.
Kevin Boodie, used up and down the order, never settled and was bowled by Mayers for five at 23-3 before the left-handed Chanderpaul Hemraj, Guyana’s leading batsman in the three-day version, was sent packing by Holder for a duck as the South Americans slumped to 26-4.
Pestano and Malteenoes left-hander Kwame Crosse tried to steady the sinking ship with a 24-run partnership before Crosse was taken by Browne for 12 at 50-5 as Braithwaite, bowling ordinary part-time off-spin, removed his West Indies under-19 colleague for the second consecutive time after having him caught behind in the three-day format.
Holder, enjoying the spin-friendly Guyana pitches, removed Pestano and Skipper Ronsford Beaton (2) in the space of two runs as Guyana collapsed to 54-7 and never recovered.
Since Regional one-day cricket began in 1998 Guyana has never won a title and will be denied that feat again this year even if they defeat the Windward Islands in their final round match at Bourda tomorrow.
Barbados will face Trinidad and Tobago for the title at DCC, while the Leewards face Jamaica at Everest in the other final round game tomorrow.
