President of the Guyana Table Tennis Association Police Commissioner Henry Greene in opening the 53rd Senior Caribbean Table Tennis Championships at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall yesterday reminded all those present that the association’s work is nowhere near completion and it would continue to pursue the path of development of the sport across the country.
Welcoming the visiting countries, Greene said that the GTTA will persist in putting its best foot forward, especially since the tournament will put Guyana on show.
He pleaded with the Guyanese athletes to lift the level of their game since they are competing with some countries and players that are higher ranked than them.
The Commissioner said that the GTTA is looking to widen its vision and hopefully this will extend to the Caribbean, while emphasising that the association’s school programme will also help to drive the development of the sport.
Minister of Sport Dr. Frank Anthony in his remarks said that Guyana has worked hard to get to this stage where the country can host international tournaments.
He lauded the leadership of Greene and the executive to push the sport, adding that with the tournament on local shores, the signs are positive to promote sport tourism.
He mentioned that if sport organisations continue to have international tournaments here then they will continue to have the support of the government.
Dr. Anthony also revealed that the government is working on acquiring a Centre of Excellence where local and players from further afield can come and ply their trade here.
He was optimistic that when the tournament visits Guyana again that the facility will be completed.
The Minister added that the government is working to realise this dream, but it would also include seeing top coaches and programmes being incorporated in this developmental thrust.
Acting President Samuel Hinds told the athletes whether they win or lose the experience of participating in such a high level tournament should be a great one.
He urged them to build bonds and play in the true spirit that sports represent.
Meanwhile, president of the Caribbean Regional Table Tennis Federation (CRTTF) Juan Vila Batista, speaking through his interpreter, said that he was proud of the effort that Guyana has made to organise the tournament.
He also stated that the visiting delegation felt at home, while calling on the players to compete with respect, brotherhood and humanity
The teams in the tournament are Guyana, Trinidad & Tobago, Barbados, St. Vincent and the Grenadine, St. Lucia, Dominica, Jamaica, Dominican Republic and Guadeloupe.
