The completion date of the US$6.6M Black Bush Polder Road, Region Six, scheduled for this year-end, is now set for April 2012, says Sunil Ganesh, Bridges Engineer, Ministry of Public Works and Communications.
According to Ganesh, the new date was given to facilitate the installation of 80 pipe culverts, which were not in the initial design, along the 34.5 kilometres (km) of roadway. This will enhance the drainage capacity of the area.
He stated that the project commenced in September 2010, and whilst the contractor was executing works, it was observed that beneath the existing roadway there were wooden culverts which the farmers utilized to drain their rice fields.
The wooden drainage systems were on the verge of collapse and would have also threatened the durability of the new road when completed, Ganesh emphasized.
The project is 20 percent in progress, with the completion of 4.5 km of asphalted surface road, installation of 10 pipe culverts, the construction of two timber bridges, and the preparation of an extra kilometre of roadway, Ganesh stated.
The scope of the project involves the rehabilitation of the existing roadway with an asphalted concrete surface. The stretch will be widened to six metres to facilitate two lanes of traffic.
The road in its current form cannot accommodate two lanes of traffic. If two vehicles were to traverse the road simultaneously one of them would have to use the shoulder of the road to give clearance to the other.
This is not the first time that Region Six is benefiting from major road works. In 2009, Government completed 87 km of roadway from New Amsterdam to Moleson Creek.
