Flight 523 mishap…
The US aviation experts along with a series of other high ranking regional aviation experts who arrived in Guyana
over the weekend to investigate the cause of Saturday morning’s crash-landing of a Caribbean Airlines aircraft, according to sources, are moving apace with their investigations.
The team also includes personnel from Trinidad and Tobago, headed by director general of the Civil Aviation Authority Ramesh Lutchme-Dial.
Minister of Transport Robeson Benn, briefly told Kaieteur News that the investigators have been revisiting the scene since there arrival.
This publication was also told that the “black boxes” have been taken for analysis in the US, and the crew has been questioned by investigators.
Minister Benn on Saturday had stated that report has to be comprehensive and would take time before it is released. According to some sources this could take up to a year.
This newspaper was told that Caribbean Airlines pilot Fareed Dean and First Officer Jason Naipaul, were among the first to be interviewed by investigators.
The investigation team is being led by Mr. Robert Benzon of the United States.
On Saturday, Caribbean Airlines Chairman George Nicholas, along with other officials arrived here to assess the damage.
Kamla Persad-Bissessar, the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago arrived in Guyana on Saturday evening and was taken on a tour of the crash site.
The aircraft was acquired by Caribbean Airlines at a cost of US$38 million. Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar said that the aircraft was insured.
“Caribbean Airlines immediately activated its emergency response programme and is in direct contact with the relevant authorities. The airline’s primary concern at this time is for those on board the aircraft and their families,” CAL said in a statement.
Nicholas stated that Caribbean Airlines is putting together a team of psychologists and other health personnel to counsel passengers and crew members.
Initial reports suggest that the pilot landed far down the runway and could not stop in time.
