The Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony on Friday handed over cheques for various amounts to leaders of Community Groups to aid in Emancipation activities.
Fifty-five groups benefitted from the (annual) exercise this year, compared to five in 2005 when the programme started.
Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GT&T) got onboard with the Ministry this year and made a substantial contribution to three of the 55 groups.
Usually, the groups’ task is to submit a list of planned activities to the Ministry. The Ministry in turn, checks the lists and funds the groups according to the activities they have planned.
Some of the activities are within small communities while others are widely publicized.
At the small ceremony, Dr. Anthony spoke of preserving the country’s African history.
In so doing, he plans to make records of popular and meaningful folk songs, broadcast a week of African historical films on the National Communications Network (NCN) television channel, and host an Emancipation exhibition at the National Museum, which is scheduled for next Thursday.
