The explosive Chris Gayle is the region’s most talked about cricketer, while leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo is the most impressive new find in all forms of the game.
From 17:00hrs on Friday August 12 at the Guyana National Stadium they will come face-to-face in the first semifinal of the Jam Zone Masters’ Cup t20 cricket tournament as the Berbice Titans face-off with the Hits and Jams Superstars.
With tickets already being bought quickly at Ashmin’s in Georgetown, a capacity crowd and plenty of fireworks is anticipated as Berbice put their national t20 title on the line.
The Ramnaresh Sarwan led Georgetown Pitbulls, which includes Jerome Taylor, Keiron Pollard, Danza Hyatt, Krishmar Santokie and Chris Barnwell come up against New Line Cavaliers in the second semifinal on August 12 from 21:00hrs under lights.
With Dwayne Smith, Denesh Ramdin, Fidel Edwards and Lendl Simmons, Gajanand Singh and Mahendra Nagamootoo in their side, New Line Cavaliers posses the artillery to advance to the August 14 final and two pulsating semifinals are promised.
The two semifinals losers will do battle from 17:00hrs on August 14 in the third place play-off before the finalists romp for the $2Million first prize.
The 31-year-old Gayle has been cast aside by the West indies Cricket Board although his 13 Test tons and average of 41.65 and 19 ODI centuries and Average of 39.06 proves he is easily the best opener in the West Indies, even in the longer forms of the game.
But it is in t20 cricket that the Jamaican has set the world on fire. He scored the first ever t20 International century in 2006 during the inaugural t20 World Cup in South Africa and his recent exploits in the IPL in India where he scored two tons, has been phenomenal.
For the first time in its 11 year history, cricket is a part of the Jam Zone Summer Break events. This year Dancehall sensations Movado and Vybz Kartel, R&B superstar Trey Songz, American female Rapper Eve and sassy Bollywood actress Shipla Shetty will all perform live on different nights.
But for cricket fans, Gayle in the world of t20cricket, is as big as any of the those artists and the anticipated contest between him and the wily Bishoo is mouth-watering.
The 25-year-old Bishoo has been a revelation since his International debut in this year’s World Cup and already with 21 wickets from just five Tests and 19 in 11 ODIs, he is one of the few sparks of brilliance in a West Indies team void of any real stars apart from Shivnarine Chanderpaul.
Bishoo is a confident campaigner and was the Man-of-the-series in last year’s Caribbean Cup t20 to help Guyana qualify for the Champions League in South Africa and has taken 27 wickets from 15 t20 matches with an economy rate of 6.54.
If Berbice are to neutralize the Gayle force much could depend on Bishoo. With Guyana’s 2006 Stanford t20 hero Narsingh Deonarine and last year’s Caribbean Cup t20 sensation Jonathon Foo in the Berbice side, a fantastic contest is anticipated in the opening game of this year’s Jam Zone Masters’ Cup.
Tickets cost $1,000 for the first night and $1,500 for the final night with children under five being admitted free. The Guyana Cricket Board has partnered with top local Events promoters Hits and Jams Entertainment to stage the cricket competition.
