As celebrations continue in observance of this year 2011 being observed as the International Year of People of African Descent, all is set for the mega event organized by the Region Six Sub Committee for the International Year for People of African descent (IYPAD) tomorrow (Emancipation Day) at the Esplanade Park in New Amsterdam.
This year, the organizer of the various African groups in Region Six decided to organize one big event called “Emancipation Celebration 2011”.
In years gone by all or most of the various African cultural groups held their own celebrations at the Respective venues in East Berbice. Over the past week, the Esplanade Park has been a hive of activities with workmen busy cleaning up the venue, weeding the bushes, leveling the ground and setting up booths at various strategic points at the venue which has already taken on a new look with many flags and decorations adorning the venue.
According to organizers, some aims and objectives of the activity are to promote African awareness and the value and relevance of African Culture in the Guyanese Society; highlight the various aspects of African Culture and to celebrate significant contributions of prominent African Guyanese to the development of our society.
The “Mega Event” is expected to bring together, for the first time, all African Cultural Organizations in Region Six (from Corriverton to Sandvoort in West Canje.)
More than 15 groups are expected to be a part of the day’s activity under the theme “Festival of African Freedom and Unity”.
During the day a number of booths will be on display and will feature different African foods, fashion, and art and craft, songs, dance, face painting, steel pan music, fashion display, hair style, head wrapping .
There will also be various foods on display including cook- up, met-em-gee, and Conkey. African drumming will be a feature on the day’s programme.
There will be addresses by the Prominent African figures in Berbice who have a made a significant contribution to life.
The day’s activity is expected to get underway at 06:00hrs with a Sun Rise Service at the Mission Chapel Congregational Church.
This will be followed by a motorcade beginning at 07:30 hrs at Marks Bridge, Islington, Greater New Amsterdam, and will proceed along the roads of New Amsterdam to the Esplanade Park. The procession will be accompanied by African drumming and recorded African Music and is expected to be one of the biggest processions along the streets of New Amsterdam. The organizers are hoping to attract 15,000 persons at the event.
A fashion show featuring 12 young ladies will be held at the end of the month.
