The Environmental Community Health Organisation (ECHO) is finalising arrangements to begin a recycling programme called “Changing the look of the school environment; improving its health” at 40 primary schools throughout Georgetown.
Initially, special collection centres will be conveniently set up for the students to dispose of their bottles, which will in turn be recycled by ECHO.
The main objectives of the exercise include a 35 percent reduction of the plastic bottles that end up on the roadsides, parapets and drains; a 35 percent improvement of the condition of the school yards; and to enlist the assistance of five hundred students in the activity.
This will be done through the ECHO clubs and will be evaluated after a six month period to see if there is the need for any modifications. To that end, the programme will be implemented into other schools and communities. The programme will also benefit the wider community. Some of the benefits involve cutting the cost of garbage collection at schools; generating additional revenue for other environmental activities at the schools; teaching students to conserve on resources and landfill space; opening opportunities for partnership between parents, teachers, community leaders and children to work towards preserving the environment; and reducing school litter and the amount of space taken up by garbage bins.
Executive Director of ECHO, Royston King, stated in a press release that participating students will be presented with special awards and prizes as a means of motivation throughout the period.
Plastic bottles impact the environment negatively by blocking drainage, restricting the flow of waterways, which in turn result in overtopping during heavy rains.
As ECHO seeks to improve the environmental conditions at schools and the wider community, the organisation is inviting other interested organisations and businesses to partner with them in making the programme a success and assist in sustainably developing Guyana, King said.
