American Professor David Lublin, who is currently visiting Guyana as a guest speaker for the American Embassy’s series on “Democracy and the Role of Free, Fair, and Transparent Elections in the Nation Building Process,” has urged the media to be more pluralistic in their reporting.
The professor expressed this notion during a press briefing yesterday at the Pegasus Hotel in Georgetown.
According to the professor, the media should put both sides of the stories out in the public and it should not be opinionated. Lublin explained that if one wants to write an opinion piece it should be in the opinion pages in the newspapers.
He stressed the importance of everyone having access to the media, like in other countries. Lublin said that if the government owns the media, they act independently, and they must be held accountable.
Lublin is a Professor at American University, Department of Government, and School of Public Affairs. He graduated with his B.A. in Political Science from Yale University summa cum laude (1990).
He then completed his A.M. in Government at Harvard University in 1992 and received his Ph.D. in Government from Harvard University in 1994.
After receiving his Ph.D. from Harvard, Lublin went on to author two books, The Paradox of Representation Racial Gerrymandering and Minority Interests in Congress and The Republican South: Democratization and Partisan Change.
He has published articles in a variety of journals, including the American Political Science Review, American Journal of Political Science, Journal of Politics, Stanford Law Review and the Washington Post. His work on redistricting was cited by the Supreme Court in Georgia v. Ashcroft.
Dr. Lublin has received two grants from the National Science Foundation, most recently for the Federal Elections Project, which compiled election results at the precinct level from around the United States.
The German Marshall Fund recently awarded him a fellowship to pursue work on minority representation in democratic countries. He is on the faculty of the Women and Politics Institute and a fellow of the Center for Congressional and Presidential Studies.
Dr. Lublin has conducted digital video conferences and meetings to discuss American elections with scholars, students, journalists and government officials in China, Hong Kong, Hungary, Malta, Moldova, Poland, Russia, Spain, and Ukraine. He also travels extensively to speak on the democratic process.
Prior to his current position, he served as Assistant Professor, Department of Government and International Studies, University of South Carolina, 1994-98 and Associate Professor, Department of Government, School of Public Affairs, American University, 2002 to 2006.
