Officials of the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) continue to work assiduously towards the development of the sport and last Saturday organized a workshop at the Carifesta Sports Complex, Georgetown where more than 30 children were briefed on the intricacies of the sport.
Dubbed ‘An Introduction to Chess,’ the sessions facilitated nine year-old students as well as those in their early teens.
The majority of the participants emanated from West Ruimveldt, Alexander Village and the Sophia communities. Sessions lasted for about three hours and facilitators, senior national champion, Taffin Khan and an earlier predecessor of the late eighties, Raymond Singh, joined Secretary of the Federation, Vishnu Rampersaud and Alex Joseph, a schoolteacher and chess trainer, in conducting the workshop. These gentlemen also identified the various pieces before introducing the students to the basic moves while imparting invaluable advice on strategies of the game.
The organizers also received support from officials of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport who provided transportation for participants while beverage giants, Banks DIH, under its Malta brand and Pizza Hut provided refreshments.
Officials of the host organization plan to hold several similar ventures in other parts of the country during the August holidays.
