Although the sun was out in all its glory all day yesterday, heavy early morning rain and tardy work removing the covers resulted in the first session of the opening day of the third round Regional under-19 three day cricket match between hosts Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago being washed out at Everest.
When play began after a 30-minute delay in the second session the visitors slipped from a solid 43-run opening start to be restricted to 166-9 as West Indies under-19 Leg-spinner Amir Khan captured his fourth five-wicket haul at this level (6-50) and left-arm spinner Anthony Adams supported with 2-36 for the Guyanese.
An unfinished 19-run last wicket partnership between Steven Sooklall (16) and Jovan Ali (2) frustrated the Guyanese who won the title the last time the competition was played in Guyana and they will hope the polish off the innings when play starts at 09:30 on the second day today.
The loss of 110 minutes yesterday was mainly due to wet areas inside the 30-yard area on both sides of the pitch from water spilling when the covers were removed.
T&T, who rebounded from their first round loss to Jamaica by beating the Leewards by 10 wickets in their last match, lost their first wicket when Duane Cockburn (19) was leg before to Khan, while his opening partner West Indies under-19 player Kieron Joseph drove Adams to mid-off to leave the score on 62-2.
Joseph looked threatening from the time he elegantly steered lively First-Class pacer Ronsford Beaton for four and gloriously caressed new ball bowler Clinton Pestano to the backward point boundary.
But indiscretion got the better of him as he failed to control an expansive drive on a slow track to help orchestrate his demise after batting for 88 minutes, 62 balls with four fours.
Eighteen-year-old Akeal Hosein, the leading scorer in his second year at this level danced down the track with a hint of Brian Lara’s flourish and sweetly thumped Adams down the ground for a boundary before stepping back when the spinner ‘pulled one down’ to hammer him through the covers for four in the same over to bring the small crowd, which included plenty of T&T supporters, to life.
But just when the left-hander from Laventille, who scored 98 against Jamaica and 68 against the Leewards, was beginning to look ominous, he clobbered a short ball to Chanderpaul Hemraj at cover and attempted an impossible single and seemed a bit unlucky to be run out for 10 at 72-3.
Emmanuel Lett (9) was removed by Khan at 74-5 and Deron Davis impetuously drove a catch to mid off before he had scored as Khan, a First-Class player who had the most wickets (27) in last year’s tournament, struck at 75-3.
Skipper and West Indies player Stephen Katwaroo (10) was soon bowled by Adams as T&T slipped to 75-5 at Tea.
The left-handed Savion Lara, who is related to the Bravos, was joined by Isaiah Rajah and the pair carried the score to 127 before Rajah was removed by Khan for 15.
The diminutive Lara (26) was then sent packing by Khan to give the Everest spinner his fourth five-wicket haul at this level in his second this year to leave T&T, without a title since their ‘double success’ in St Vincent in 2005, on 138-8.
The 18-year-old Khan, urged on by the home fans which included the National female team which leaves for Barbados on August 6, soon had Idress Mohamed caught behind by Kevin Boodie for 15 to leave the visitors on 147-9.
The tail then wagged for the lads from Carnival Country as the Guyanese failed end the innings before the day’s play ended in fading light.
