Battling a cold day that forced the Guyanese contingent to don sweaters did not stop amateur boxer Imran Khan from turning up the heat in the boxing arena to secure victory.
Khan defeated Kenny Canon of Venezuela 4-1 as the Guyanese team rallied around their man, bringing the arena down with their vociferous support. Bert Braithwaite was due to fight Hernandez of Venezuela, while Mark Pierre was to meet Horroyo of Colombia in the other scheduled fights for the Guyanese boys.
Today the semi-finals will see Khan and Samuel Primo in contention for medals.
Cycling was set to also begin yesterday.
On Sunday, competition commenced in boxing with Stephan Gouveia losing what is being said to be a very controversial decision to Jimenez of the Dominican Republic. The crowd demonstrated their displeasure to the decision. Ron Smith’s fight against Correa of Cuba was stopped in the second round after he received two standing eight counts.
In Karate, Guyana received their second medal Sunday when Patrick Cheeks won bronze in the under 84kgs male category.
Track & Field starts tomorrow in Barquisimeto.
