The senior constabulary rank attached to the New Amsterdam Constabulary who was implicated in the recent escape of prisoner Krishna Paul Doerga from the New Amsterdam Prison has been charged with aiding and abetting the release of a convicted criminal.
Corporal Orin Joseph, Charles Roberts an Assistant Superintendent of Lot 50 Stanleytown, New Amsterdam, Berbice, was on Friday placed on $400,000 bail by Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo when he appeared before her at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s court
On Saturday June 4, last, at Penitentiary Walk, New Amsterdam, he allegedly aided and abetted convicted prisoner and former businessman, Krisha Paul Doerga to escape.
Roberts is the second person to be charged with the offence following Prison Officer Orlando Jaundoo who was previously charged with a similar offence.
Roberts was detained after investigators garnered that he was in the vehicle which transported prison officer Jaundoo, and escapee, Krishna Paul Doerga, from New Amsterdam to Skeldon.
He was previously arrested and placed on $25,000 station bail. The matter was forwarded to the DPP for advice.
His next court date is August 5.
Doerga, a 52-year-old businessman who was serving a three-year sentence for fraud, left the New Amsterdam Prison with Jaundoo under the pretext of repairing a sewing machine at the Prison Officers Recreational Hall and Sports Club across the road from the penitentiary.
However, the two men ended up at Springlands and then in Nickerie, Suriname where Doerga, after hiring a taxi, tried to slip the Prison officer, by jumping in the vehicle first and telling the driver to drive.
However, Jaundoo was able to slip into the taxi where a scuffle ensued between the two. The Suriname police eventually got involved and the men were captured.
Jaundoo was a Tutor and Literacy Officer at the New Amsterdam Prison.
Kaieteur News understands that Doerga, a Surinamese, cannot be extradited because there is no extradition treaty between the two countries.
Jaundoo who was refused bail has since been granted bail in the high court.
