In advancing diplomatic ties with Guyana, the Argentine Navy ship “Libertad” is visiting the country on a mission to promote peace and solidarity, while saluting the Presidency of Guyana at the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR). The ship will be leaving on Tuesday for neighbouring Venezuela before continuing on its historical voyage around South America .
The vessel is moored offshore, unable to dock at Port Georgetown because of the shallowness of the Demerara River.
The journey to the ship was of 45-minute duration from the coast guard wharf at Ruimveldt by the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) coast guard which transported officials of government, members of the Diplomatic Corps, media personnel and special guests.
‘Libertad’ which is providing hands-on training for life at sea for future officers. It was built to accommodate 300 crew members.
The ship presently has 27 officers, 185 petty officers, and 91 crew members from Argentina along with 15 others from around the world.
According to the Captain of the ship, Guillermo Cyburec, on June 19, 1963 the ship set sail on her maiden voyage. Her training voyages contribute to fostering international naval relations and strengthening professional and friendship bonds with foreign navies.
He said the visit also coincides with the 2011 Pro Tempore Presidency of Guyana at the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR); this coincides with the ship’s maiden voyage to Guyana.
The special feature of the three-masted frigate ship is the wood carving made by the Spanish sculptor Carlos Garcia Gonzalez who lived in the city of Buenos Aries. His inspiration had been his wife who passed away before the figure was placed on wood.
The ship which sails the world has been awarded prizes such as the “Great Medal” in 1966 when establishing a world record for tall ships crossing the North Atlantic.
