Three sailors were rescued from a fiery death when their trawler ‘Atlantic Star’ burst into flames on the Essequibo River near the island of Leguan yesterday afternoon.
The men were rescued by a group of fishermen who saw the flames and risked their lives to help the stranded sailors.
This newspaper understands that it was around 18:00 hours when a group of fishermen who were on their way into shore, saw the flames coming from the trawler and decided to turn back to render assistance.
However when they were about to reach the vessel they saw another boat sailing off in the direction of the West Coast of Demerara. It was later learnt that that boat had already rescued the stranded sailors from the trawler. The sailors from the trawler were taken ashore at Meten-Meer-Zorg.
The flames were reportedly seen from as far as Leonora. Up to late last night the ill-fated vessel was still burning.
