Four teams will walk the plank when action in the Georgetown Football Association/National Sports Commission (NSC) Futsal football tournament continues tonight at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) with what promises to be four exciting matches.
In what is expected to be an intense battle, the Guyana Defence Force will oppose the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) and if the action in the preliminaries is used as the yardstick, a furious battle is envisaged.
The soldiers will depend on Paul Babb who is in ripping form. In their last match against Thomas FC, that player displayed dexterity and grit to register a brace in the 4th and 7th minutes. As in that encounter, the dapper striker can expect support from Winston Tanner, Royan Morrison and Eusi Phillips the three other players to pierce the opposition’s goal.
GFC would be eager to erase the 1 nil loss to Fruta Conquerors early in the tournament and would be coming with a vengeance to get past the GDF lineup. A thriller is in the making and the best team advances while the loser will have to enjoy the rest of the action from the comforts of the stands.
In the other matches, YMCA, the winners of group ‘A’ go head to head with Police, the runners up of Group ‘B.’ In an earlier game, the lawmen won by default after Rhythm Squad failed to show up for their match. The former team still got in some practice, albeit in a losing 2-1 effort, when it opposed Houston Stars in an exhibition affair. Police would have to turn in an improved performance if they are to move on to the next round.
In the other matches slated for tonight, Beacons FC, the winners of Group ‘A,’ fresh from a 2-1 victory over Camptown FC, are oozing confidence ahead of their match against the runners up of that group, Houston Stars. Beacons will place their hopes on Daniel Favourite who seems to be in ripping form. Add the boot of Orvil Milton and Beacons would feel confident of advancing to the next round.
In the final game of the night, Fruta Conquerors, the winner of group ‘C’ will oppose the runners up of Group ‘D,’ Flamingo FC.
The tournament got underway on June 21 last and will conclude on July 17. All teams affiliated to the GFA are involved in the competition and the action is expected to reach fever pitch when the tournament continues tonight at 19:00hrs sharp.
The winner of the tournament carts off $500,000 while the runners up win half that amount. The third and fourth place finishers receive $150,000 and $100,000 respectively.
