To ensure the sustainability of Guyana’s fishing industry, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is working with the Ministry of Agriculture to create a regulatory framework for inland fisheries, says Dr. Lystra Fletcher-Paul, FAO representative.
She said that the draft document which will be based on data collected via consultations throughout the year with communities and various agencies is expected to be completed by year-end.
“With the development of the regulatory framework we are promoting sustainable management of the inland fisheries resources of Guyana,” Dr. Fletcher-Paul stated.
A national consultant is currently on the ground collecting baseline data from the various inland fishing communities in the different Regions.
In May, two consultants (Bio-economist and Fish biologist) were in Guyana reviewing Guyana’s fish stock data, in terms of the types of fish and their populations at different times of the year. Apart from field visits and interviews with stakeholders in the fisheries sector, the consultants also conducted a basic training course for staff of the Fisheries Department of the Ministry of Agriculture and researchers of the University of Guyana, in Fisheries Biology with an introduction to Fisheries Management.
FAO will also be working with the Fisheries Department in the development of a fish stock database for effective management.
She noted that this initiative would greatly assist Amerindian communities since they are heavily dependent on fishing for their livelihoods. Seasonal fishing and the utilization of aquaculture would enhance local food security, which is a mandate of FAO.
Guyana is one of the highest consumers of fish worldwide. The industry contributes approximately three percent to national Gross Domestic Product, with a growth of 7.4 percent from 2009 to 2010.
