Sets new NAPF squat record; breaks into world top 10
It’s the Dawn of a new Barker as far as the North American circuit is concerned. Guyana’s strongest woman, Dawn Mc Cammon Barker rewrote the record books yet again when she not only won gold in the Women 84+kg weight class at the International Powerlifting Federation/North American Powerlifting Federation (NAPF) Championships in Miami Florida yesterday, but also set a new NAPF Squat record.
Having already set new marks at the Caribbean and Commonwealth levels this year apart from home, Barker proved to the world that she is a class athlete when she blew away her opposition yesterday at the Hyatt Hotel in Miami, Florida with another breathtaking performance which was witnessed by her father who flew in from New York, Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation (GAPF) President and Secretary Peter Green and Gordon Spencer and fellow athlete, Karel Marks.QAT
The Bauxite Mining Town of Linden athlete smashed the old NAPF squat record of 234kgs with a new standard of 237.5kgs. In the process, Barker also raised the bar with regard to her Caribbean and Commonwealth records of 227.5kgs.
In setting her new mark yesterday, Barker, who was one of three female athletes featured at the championships, took the gold and easily disposed of the USA champion Malinda Baum who had to settle for silver while Trinidad and Tobago’s Cheryl Abraham took bronze.
This vintage performance propelled Barker into the top 10 in the World while her overall total of 540kgs was way better than her overall total in the Caribbean of 517kgs.
Karel Mars will go into action tomorrow aiming to strike gold for Guyana also in the Men Open 105kgs Class against 8 other competitors .
GAPF President Peter Green in an invited comment said that he was overwhelmed with Barker’s performance and very proud of her.
“Dawn is a phenomenal athlete, very easy going but explosive when competing. She has vindicated the high degree of confidence I have always placed in her and the other athletes who have placed Guyana on the powerlifting map ever since our return to the Caribbean, Regional and International levels.
I would like to offer congratulations to Dawn on behalf of the GAPF Executive and its members for another scintillating performance. She has once again made us as a nation proud.”
