GPF/GDF advance to knockout stage of GFA/NSC Futsal tourney

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) turned in a display of skills and guts to defeat Camptown 2-1 when action continued in the Futsal football extravaganza organized by the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) in collaboration with the National Sports Commission (NSC) at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue, Saturday evening last.
The win has ensured that the law enforcement officers advance to the knockout stage which commences on July 12 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, Homestretch Avenue.
Reshawn Sandiford breached the Police defence in the 1st minute to send his team ahead. Eight minutes later, Kwame Alford equalized the situation with a stinging right foot shot that sizzled past the Camptown custodian.
The two teams then engaged in a ferocious battle with neither showing an inclination to ease the pressure. Just when it appeared as though the match would have ended on a 1-1 stalemate, Derron Bentick slammed in the decider simultaneously with the final whistle.
The Guyana Defence Force also qualified for the knockout round following a 3-0 victory over Charlestown after Paul Bobb registered a hat-trick in the 12th, 13th and 15th minutes.
Football buffs were also treated to two action packed exhibition matches. In the first, YMCA and Houston Stars played to a 1-1 stalemate while in the second encounter Beacon FC humiliated Thomas FC 7-0.
The action heats up tomorrow night with several exciting encounters. Fruta Conquerors tackle the Georgetown Football Club (GFC), while the University of Guyana plays Black Pearl. The latter team must win this game to keep their hopes alive of progressing to the next round.
Flamingo FC is also in a similar predicament as Black Pearl and will hope to come out victorious when it opposes the GDF, also set for tomorrow night. Thomas United FC has lost both of their games to date and has no chance of winning the top prize. That team will play Charlestown which is also in a must win situation.
The tournament got underway on June 21 last and will conclude on July 17 next. All teams affiliated to the GFA are involved in the competition.
