In addition to the two persons who were charged in connection with the drug bust at John Fernandes Wharf, last week, and remanded to prison on Monday, Ola Pedro appeared yesterday before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court to answer to the charge of unlawful drug trafficking. He was also refused bail.
The defendant who gave his address as 61 West Ruimveldt pleaded not guilty to the charge when read. He was subsequently remanded to prison and is expected to make his next court appearance on July 5.
The allegation brought against Pedro states that on June 16, last, at the John Fernandes Wharf, he attempted to traffic 393.5 kilograms (867.5 lbs) of cannabis.
Customs Anti Narcotics Unit (CANU) Prosecutor Oswald Massiah told the court that stemming from the discovery of the said cannabis in a container which came from Jamaica to Guyana, two persons, Leyland Nichols and George Burrowes, were arrested and charged. He added that further investigations launched by the CANU led them to Pedro.
The container arrived aboard the MV Stadt Luneburg on June 12 with a shipment of shoes for a footwear importer.
The prosecutor said that during his arrest, a search was conducted on the defendant’s person, and two cell phones were found. One of the cell phones was bought in Jamaica and the other in Guyana. The cell phone which was said to be bought in Jamaica revealed a text message sent to the defendant with the number of the container in which the illegal substance was discovered.
When the local cell phone was checked, it showed that the defendant made calls to one of the persons apprehended on June 16 at the John Fernandes Wharf. When the defendant made the call the person was already in custody and not in position to receive the call.
Massiah told the court that Pedro was later charged with the offence.
The prosecution objected to bail. Magistrate Beharry then remanded the accused.
