Guyanese to depart immediately after India series
By Sean Devers in Jamaica
Veteran Guyanese left-hander Shiv Chanderpaul will depart the Caribbean immediately after India series next month for England to fulfill a contract with County side Warwickshire.
The left-hander, who played the first of his 131 Tests in 1994 against England on his home ground Bourda, is two matches away from becoming the most capped West Indies Test player and had stints with English Counties Lancashire and Durham in the past.
Chanderpaul, who made 23 and 30 against India in Jamaica in the first test of the three Test series, was not picked for ODIs series against Pakistan or India after he refused the request by the WICB to retire from limited over cricket.
He will become the club’s overseas player for the final stages of the English season to replace Pakistani batsman Mohammad Yousuf, who has been at Edgbaston for the first half of this season.
Chanderpaul, only behind Brain Lara on the list of most Test runs by a West Indian, has scored five of his 22 centuries against India from 18 matches and averages 70 against the Indians, whom he scored his first hundred against in 1997.
He is expected to feature in the two remaining Tests against India in Barbados and Dominica before arriving in the West Midlands for a stint with the Bears.
Warwickshire’s director of cricket Ashley Giles is delighted that a player of such standing and reputation has agreed to join the club. “It is universally acknowledged that Shiv is a class act and has proved his worth time after time at the highest level,” said Giles yesterday.
“Not only does he possess the qualities and talents that we are looking for in abundance, but he also comes with a reputation as a hard-working cricketer, a great character and a professional with a tremendous work ethic. “We are delighted that he has agreed to join us for the vitally important final stages of our season,” the official added.
Chanderpaul will leave tomorrow with the rest of the West Indies team for Barbados.
