– National Men’s Champion, Munroe omitted
In an effort to ensure that Guyana fully maximizes the advantage of hosting the Caribbean Table Tennis Championships, the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) has shortlisted 11 females and 18 males before selecting its final compositions to face the region.
Interestingly, there was no mention of Godfrey Munroe among the males shortlisted to compete, which has to be an oversight. Munroe is the current National Men’s Singles Champion, winning the title in 2000, 2008 and 2011 when the Championships returned.
Guyana will be hosting the Caribbean Championships during August 12-20 at the same time the City of Georgetown will be abuzz with the annual Jam Zone Summer Break. Some 12 teams are expected to compete at the highest forum for competition in the region.
GTTA President and Commissioner of Police, Henry Greene, stated at the launch of the National Sports Commission Independence Tournament last weekend that 12 teams from the tennis region which comprise Guyana are interested in competing in the tournament.
But a release from the GTTA identified Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Santo Domingo, St. Kitts and St. Lucia among the teams certain about competing in Guyana when the event is held at Cliff Anderson’s Sports Hall, which has been identified as the Games’ venue.
“Having together all the players’ shortlisted way before the start of the Caribbean Championship, the Coaching Staff and the election panel can properly make their assessment and select the best team to represent Guyana,” a release from the GTTA said on Monday.
In addition, it was stated that the National Table Tennis Coach, Linden Johnson, said that he will meet with the players shortlisted this week to streamline the training and other preparatory detail of Team Guyana for the upcoming Caribbean Championships.
The players shortlisted are: Males: Paul David; Idi Lewis; Christopher Franklin; Jonathan Sankar; Edinho Lewis; Paul Meusa; Orin Hickerson; Colin France; Joel Alleyne; Hughley Griffith; Nigel Bryan; Denzel Hopkinson; Brandon Belle; Brad Belle; Gibran Hussein-Safaraz; Sherwin Sahadeo; Warren Hachshaw; and Steven Barrow.
Females: Trenace Lowe; Michelle John; Natalie Cummings; Julianna Blake; Ambrose Thomas; Akeish Nedd; Desiree Lancaster; Chelsea Edghill; Mellissa Richardson; Adielle Rushevelle; and Rhonda Farley.
