Dear Editor,
Thanks to your paper and Mr. Leon Suseran for the article featuring Professor Daizal Samad, Director of the Berbice Campus of the University of Guyana.
Over the years, I have been doing small projects for the Berbice Campus, securing books and computers for their use. I had the honour of meeting Dr. Samad who is a humble, friendly person, who seems to get along well with others.
What is impressive about talking with Dr. Samad is that he is full of ideas to expand the university and to connect with the training needs of the community. When I visited the campus, there was a large class of police officers taking a computer course. This is a good example of the university meeting local, rural needs. The only thing that seems to be holding back the Berbice Campus is the current structure of inadequate local autonomy.
Given Dr. Samad’s vast and distinguished experience in higher education, including progressive countries such as Singapore and Malaysia, it seems as if Dr. Samad would be a good addition to the Turkeyen Campus where he can make a bigger contribution in the area of planning, program implementation, and overall leadership.
Thanks to Dr. Tota Mangar and Dr. Prem Misir for securing such a special person to head the Berbice Campus. As a Berbician, I am proud of how the Berbice Campus is making progress. Thank you Dr. Samad.
