Cougars edge Rosignol in exciting final
Football fans and supporters in Berbice were on Sunday last given a taste of what is to come when the GT&T FastBall competition officially kicks off on July 2, at the Mackenzie Sports Club Ground.
It was the Ancient County’s turn to enjoy FastBall Awareness games at the Skeldon Community Centre Ground and they were well entertained by this new and innovative brand of football, FastBall with games lasting for 30 minutes, two equal halves of 15 minutes each.
In the final of the 4-team contest, Cougars FC turned back the challenge of leading Berbice side Rosignol United 2-1.
Kelvin Joseph netted the double, finding the back of the nets in the 5th and 22nd minute respectively with Delroy Fraser pulling one back for Rosignol in the 26th minute.
In matches leading up to the final, Cougars wasted no time in stamping their authority over Courtland whom they whipped by a 4-2 margin with goals coming from W. Benjamin in just the 1st minute, J. Joseph in the 17th and K. Joseph (blue ball goal) 22 minutes on were the other goal scorers.
Courtland’s consolation goals, a blue ball effort came off the boot of E. Gibson in 14th minute.
Rosignol too was in a no nonsense mood when they whipped Liverpool 5-1.
Liverpool cantered into the lead in the 8th minute but their scoring ability dried up thereafter.
Rosignol’s Delroy Fraser who seemed to have mastered scoring with the blue ball did so twice in the match which, one in either half – 15th and 30th minute respectively. Delwin Fraser converted the other Rosignol goal in the 19th minute.
In the other game, Rose hall lost to Corriverton Links 2-0, Seon Johnas (5) and Rafael Tookily (17) the players finding the back of the nets.
More Awareness games are set for this weekend at Uitvlugt Community Centre Ground on the west Coast of Demerara and Bartica Community Centre Ground on Sunday.
