Unlikely to be selected to play in Monday’s Test
Chris Gayle is unlikely to feature in the three-Test series between West Indies and India, a regional cricket official said yesterday after the Jamaican left-hander met with WICB officials in Kingston, Jamaica on Tuesday in as a four-hour meeting which began at 18:30hrs.
Gayle and officials of the West Indies Cricket Board failed to reach an amicable resolution to the rift that has developed between the two sides in recent weeks.
It followed the West Indies opener’s highly-publicised, controversial interview on a Jamaican radio station, where he slammed the WICB, and was also critical of Chief Executive Officer Ernest Hilaire, West Indies coach Ottis Gibson and West Indies captain Darren Sammy. It is understood that Gayle was accompanied at the meeting by WIPA President Dinanath Ramnarine and WIPA executive Wavell Hinds.
The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) was represented by its chief executive officer Earnest Hilaire; Tony Howard, Director Cricket, head coach Ottis Gibson and manager Richie Richardson. The Times of India reported that a ‘well-placed source’ informed that it was a highly contentious meeting but it was not Gayle who was driving the contention. It was driven by Ramnarine.” According to the Times of India, Gayle and the WIPA officials, who accompanied him in the meeting, wanted the WICB to agree to Gayle’s return and accept the fact that the comments made by the batsman in an interview to a Jamaican radio channel were personal. The WICB, however, does not see it that way and they feel Gayle has acted in an unprofessional manner as did the WIPA officials, who failed to maintain any decorum.
However, a source close to the meeting informed Kaieteur Sports last night that while things did not go smoothly the meeting was not contentious as reported in the Times of India and questioned who the Indian newspaper’s source was since they provided a ‘one-sided account of events which made Ramnarine, a former West Indies Test spinner look like a ‘trouble maker’. Gayle was not picked in today’s final ODI against India in his homeland and according to the source the Jamaica is not likely to be picked for the first Test which starts in Jamaica on Monday.
