Dr. Steve Surujbally, Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), on Thursday appealed to members of the Private Sector Commission (PSC) to call for the resuscitation of the Media Monitoring Unit (MMU), which was disbanded for no known reason.
According to the GECOM Chairman, since the establishment of the MMU there was no recurrence of violence in the streets that historically happened.
It was generally accepted that the MMU played a critical role in the prevention of election related violence in 2006. He emphasized that GECOM engineered the Media Code of Conduct and it was revised and signed onto by practitioners and media house owners in preparation for Local Government elections in 2010.
He stated that many countries, including Kosovo and Nepal, have adopted this document. It has been abandoned in Guyana.
It was noted that discussions are ongoing whether international observers from Commonwealth, Organization of American States, and CARICOM should be invited to observe the 2011 National Elections.
The absence of violence during elections demonstrates that there is some measure of political stability which results in economic prosperity.
According to the PSC’s Ramesh Dookhoo, “The issues of macroeconomic stability and political stability are in some senses inextricably linked since the macro-economic framework is managed by the government of the day and political stability is in large part a consequence in how we as a democratic society choose our government.”
He noted that the body is concerned that political instability around the elections is bad for business in the short term because many shut their doors. It is also bad for business in the long term as it affects national image and credibility as a destination for investment.
He added that, “In this I wish to emphasize that our goal is not just to keep businessmen’s doors open at any cost but rather to ensure that we conduct our political process with maturity securing all interests at every level.
“We are working with stakeholders and donor agencies to make even greater contributions in this area over the remaining period between now and the next general election,” Dookhoo stated.
