The finals of the National Drama Festival will be held from tomorrow to June 3 at the National Cultural Centre.
All types of plays were eligible for presentation when representatives of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport visited the outlying rehearsal venues, at mutually pre-arranged times.
The groups thereby requested and received expert assistance from these “Special Reps”, to help them prepare the best possible technically sound production.
The persons chosen for this important task were Malcolm De Freitas, Henry Rodney, Ron Robinson, Sonia Yarde and Richard Naraine.
Preliminaries were held between May 14 and May 21, and yielded the 18 best plays in both the Open and School and Youth Group categories. This elite group shall be transported to, and hosted by the Ministry in Georgetown for the duration of the finals.
Tomorrow’s plays are: Odale’s Choice, Spirit of Defeat, I am a Man, Pious, and Miss Edwards.
On Tuesday, the dramas are I Phone Desata, A Child Scorned, This is Guyana, Dance Philosophy, Swingers on the Playground, and Shadows.
On Wednesday, the dramas are Christ is the Answer, Ah Who in Charge O We, Enough is Enough, Sugarwater People, and Shoes Blues.
On Wednesday’s the dramas to be featured are Full Hundred and the Cinderella Story.
Over $2 million in cash and prizes will be awarded to deserving productions countrywide. The top cash awards will be donated by Digicel Guyana Ltd.
Apart from the Champion Play in the Youth and School Group and the Open Category, there will be a writer’s prize along with the usual Best Play, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director awards etc.
Tickets for the afternoon shows, which begin at 13: 00 h, are free and may be uplifted at the National Cultural Centre. The evening shows begin at 19:00 h and tickets are priced at $300.
