The Education Ministry on Friday commissioned a $45.8 million primary school at De Hoop, Mahaica, Region Five.
The building which houses a library, computer laboratory, staff room, kitchenette and canteen among other facilities, was made possible through funding from the Basic Needs Trust Fund, the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) and the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA).
The school replaces the old wooden structure which was built on the very location in 1949 to accommodate pupils in De Hoop and neighbouring communities. While the school was under construction, pupils were housed at the De Hoop Assemblies of God Church.
Education Minister Shaik Baksh, at the commissioning ceremony held at the school, said that the investment represents yet another commitment by Government to modernise the education system.
He challenged the head teacher and staff members to concentrate on providing pupils with a quality education, stressing that they deserve nothing less.
“Every child who leaves the primary cycle must attain satisfactory literacy and numeracy standards to avoid a spill over of the weaknesses at the primary level to secondary schools,” the Minister said.
This problem, he said, can be prevented or minimized if teachers are more dedicated and committed to the job and parents are more involved.
The school’s head teacher, Leoraine Nobrega, also praised the support of its Parent/Teacher Association and disclosed that the body recently donated a photocopier for the school.
Regional Education Officer, Urline Crandon, noted that the new building is a “dream come through” and urged Nobrega, her staff, and the PTA to take care of the structure. Regional Chairman, Harrinarine Baldeo, who also spoke at the event, disclosed that a new nursery school will be built at Ithaca and the region is looking to dismantle the Rosignol Primary School and construct a new building.
