Junior chess player Roberto Neto scored an upset over top senior player Pierre Boucher when the TOPCO Juices Independence Chess Tournament got underway last weekend at the KEI-SHAR’S Sports Club.
Neto, of Diamond Secondary is among the 11 junior players competing with the seniors in the tournament. Boucher said he underestimated his much younger opponent and saw the lad’s checkmate coming when it was too late. However, Cecil Cox of Queen’s College is leading among the juniors with two points after three matches. He lost his game to Boucher.
Suhai Feng of North Georgetown Secondary, Saeed Ali of Richard Ishmael Secondary and Rashad Hussain of Mae’s Schools are all bundled on two points each in the junior category. Neto and Anthony Drayton drew their encounter and they are both on one and a half points each after three rounds played.
National Champion Taffin Khan is leading the senior category with the maximum three points after three matches and he is followed by veteran player David Khan on two points. Pierre Boucher and Nowrattan Persaud are also on two points each while Alex Joseph is on one point. The tournament continues on Sunday May 29.
