Almost two days after 49-year-old Toolsie Ram’s right hand was severed in an industrial accident at Caricom Rice Mills Limited (CRML), the company has issued a statement.
According to management, “on Sunday, May 15 at approximately 17:00h, 49-year-old Toolsie Ram, employed as a Dryer Operator with Carciom Rice Mills Limited was involved in an industrial accident, which resulted in his right hand – above the wrist being severed.
Ram, also called Renzil, by his fellow employees has been employed with CRML since the establishment of the Company in 1990, but assumed the post of Dryer Operator in 2003 after a promotion. He has over the years proven to be an outstanding employee, giving immense support to the team of Operators and contributing tangibly to the achievement of Departmental and Company objectives.
Following the accident, the relevant authorities have been notified, and the Ministry of Labour has already commenced investigations.
The Company is also conducting its own investigations into the matter and has vowed to do all in its power to ensure the injured employee receives maximum compensation from its insurers.
As news of Ram’s unfortunate accident continues to circulate countrywide, officials of the Guyana Development Rice Board, who have since expressed sympathy to the patient and his family ,also paid him a courtesy visit, at the Suddie Public Hospital, while in the Region, on Tuesday, (May) 17.”
Ram, who remains a patient at the Suddie Public Hospital, is said to be recuperating comfortably.
According to earlier reports, Ram was cleaning an appliance called the field roll, attached to a Twin & S machine, when he accidently lost almost ten inches from below his elbow of his right hand.
Ram claims that the machine was off when he commenced cleaning it.
“All I felt was my hand being swallowed up and the machine was suddenly back in rotation.’”
Although CRML released a statement of the occurrence of the accident, management are not shedding clarity, whether or not Ram was alone at the time, or whether he was obeying all of the company’s stringent protocols.
