Another cricket tournament has been launched in the Ancient County of Berbice as corporate Guyana continues to offer unparalleled support to the nation’s leading cricket Board.
With an already packed and overflowing schedule of tournaments, the Berbice Cricket Board has joined hands with Mr. Tony Amerally of Amerally Investments Ltd. to bring off an Under-17 Inter Club tournament which will attract over fifty clubs in Berbice.
Public Relations Officer of the Berbice Cricket Board and Chairman of the Special Events Committee Hilbert Foster was high in praise for Regional Chairman, Region 6, Mr. Zulfikar Mustapha who played a major role in obtaining the sponsorship. He {Foster} described the Chairman as a true friend of Berbice cricket.
The tournament would be opened to cricketers born on or after September 1st 1996 and all clubs in Berbice are asked to get in contact with the Berbice Cricket Board to register as early as possible or call 333-2375 for more information.
This tournament will pay tribute to the memory of the late Leslie Amsterdam AA for his contributions to the game in Berbice.
The expected 50 teams would be divided into at least 6 sub-groups Foster noted. At the end of the tournament an Elite squad of 18 players would be selected for further training.
Board Treasurer Anil Beharry and President Keith Foster agreed that the tournament was another milestone in the ongoing massive development of the game.
They urged the young players to take full advantage of the opportunities presented to them. Representative of the sponsor, Mr. Roy Jafferally filling in for Tony Amerally, expressed his Company’s delight to be associated with the Berbice Cricket Board, describing the Board as a symbol of brotherhood, vision and progress.
He was high in praise for the work that the Foster brothers have been doing to raise the level of cricket and said that they brought Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club magic to the BCB. Jafferally wished the BCB a successful tournament and pledged his Company’s co-operation in the future to make it an annual event.
The presentation the sponsorship cheque of $200,000 was handed over to the Board’s Treasurer. Teams all around Berbice are encouraged to start preparation for the programme which would start shortly.
