Dear Editor,
The recent meeting between the PNCR’s Presidential Candidate Mr. David Granger and members of the Guyana Manufacturing and Services Association was very insightful.
Without a doubt, like the popular Guyanese singer Natural Black once sung in a popular song “Far From Reality”, I am now quite convinced that this is most applicable to Mr. Granger who in responding to a question, literally shrugged off the importance of the sugar industry and state owned oil company to the people of this nation.
How can Mr. Granger say the sugar industry and petroleum distribution is no concern to the state? Is he Rip Van Winkle who has just woken up from a centuries old slumber? How can an industry which is the largest employer in a nation and contributes 16% of your GDP be of no interest to you? How can thousands of workers and by extension thousands of families from all walks of life be of no interest to you?
Mr. Granger apparently believes that the politically correct answer on any sector, especially if it is experiencing problems is to privatize. That way he could avoid facing the challenges and come up with real solutions to benefit the people of this nation. And just in case Mr. Granger is interested, if he was the leader in Government at this point most of the sugar workers would have been on the breadline, as the current Government has been pressured relentlessly to close its operations.
If it had caved in to pressure by the so called experts then, including some opposition parties Project Gold would never have become a reality.
This project offers so much hope for the East Demerara estates which are gradually being molded into an efficient complex to produce value added sugars to satisfy lucrative overseas market, attracting a premium price which is over 30% more than we currently receive for our raw sugar. Had we gone your route Mr. Granger, thousands of workers would have been hungry and homeless in East Demerara by now.
According to Mr. Granger, a state owned petroleum distribution corporation is also of no interest to a PNCR Government. What this means is that when the oil prices sky rocketed recently and on every occasion before that, all across the nation there would have been no alternative but for consumers to pay the premium prices at the private stations with no alternative of state subsidy as is the case with GUYOIL. What this means is that the families who flock to the GUYOIL outlets all across this nation to purchase kerosene at a much reduced price than that at private service stations, will now be forced to pay extra with no alternative.
What this means is that immediately after an increase in the price for fuel, commuters across the nation will be forced to pay increased public transportation fares. Could one imagine if such a Government were in place by the end of this year, what would be the fate of every single family in this nation in another year or so?
