Kishan Jaikarran and Orin Ford appeared yestreday before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry to face the charge of an illegal cultivation.
It is alleged that on May 10, Jaikarran and Ford cultivated prohibited plants, namely cannabis sativa, at Moblissa on the Linden/Soesdyke Highway.
The two 24-year-old gold miners, Jaikarran, who is a Sophia resident, and Ford, who resides in Central Rupununi, were represented by Attorney at Law Kevon Bess, who denied the charge when it was read to his clients.
Police Prosecutor Joel Ali in presenting the facts of the case stated that the two were arrested at Moblissa on the Linden Soesdyke Highway, where they were found attending to the plants.
The Prosecutor objected to the defendants being granted bail, stating that they are flight risks and they do not reside in the district where the plants were found.
Prosecutor Steven Telford also added that it is not a bailable offence and he asked that they be remanded to prison and the matter be transferred to the Christiansburg Court.
The men were remanded to prison and their matter was transferred to the Christianburg Court, with their next appearance scheduled for May 17.
