Three year-old Tony Ramlagan who was severely burnt at his parents’ Enmore home on Tuesday morning has died.
This newspaper was told that the toddler succumbed to his injures at around 03:00 hours yesterday while being treated at the Georgetown Public Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit.
Meanwhile, early yesterday morning the baby’s mother, Roschell Jagmohan, was again invited to the Cove and John police station to further assist with investigations.
A source close to the investigation said that there might be some difficulty in finding the cause of the fire, as the occupants of the house have already cleaned up the premises. Kaieteur News understands that the remnants of the burnt bed and other items that were in the room, including a fan, have all been removed.
The news of the child’s death has sent shockwaves throughout the community. Given his condition immediately following the incident many had speculated that he would not have survived, but most were still hoping for his recovery.
When contacted yesterday, the child’s relatives were at a loss for words as they struggled to come to grips with the tragedy.
One relative told this publication that while the police have their work to do, the constant visits to the station are not making the situation any easier for the family.
On Tuesday last at around 11:30 hours fire broke out at a house located at Lot 7 Blossom Scheme, Enmore.
Initial reports are that the fire started in one of the two bedrooms of the upper flat. Three year-old Tony Ramlagan was asleep in the room while his mother was said to be in the kitchen.
By the time the young mother realised that the bedroom was on fire it was too late for her to save her son from being badly burnt.
According to reports, neighbours had to extinguish the fire in the bedroom before anyone could have gotten to the child. The toddler was then rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was treated and subsequently admitted before he succumbed.
This recent incident of a person losing their life as a result of a blaze is believed to be the third of its kind for the year.
On March 22, last, two-year-old Nicholas Maraj perished in his grandmother’s house which went up in flames at Vryheid’s Lust East Coast Demerara. Nicholas and a cousin were reportedly playing with matches on a bed in the house.
And less than two weeks later, on April 2, a fire at Aranka claimed the life of a Venezuelan who was identified as Fransisco Silva. The fire, of unknown origin, started at a building which housed a shop and living quarters.
