Former West Indies under-19 opener Trevon Griffith and his opening partner Shemroy Barrington both scored half-centuries for Guyana against Pakistan at Bourda yesterday on the final day of their two-day match, while Test left-hander Shiv Chanderpaul contributed a patient 44 in the drawn match.
When rain ended the contest at 16:32hrs, Guyana were 252-6 replying the visitors who declared on their overnight score of 330-7. Nineteen year-old Griffith, on his senior Guyana debut, looked the most fluent of the Guyana batsmen and his 55 was decorated with nine fours and lasted 68 balls before he edged a ball which left him from pacer Tanvir Ahmed to the Keeper at 78-1.
By Lunch Barrington had reached 39 and Test player Narsingh Deonarine 15 and after the interval the pair took their partnership to 62 before Barrington, whose 58 came from 89 balls and included six fours and two sixes, was trapped leg before to off-spinner Saeed Ajmal at 140-2.
Chanderpaul, a 36-year-old veteran of 129 Test and 268 ODIs, arrived to a standing ovation from the fair size working day crowd and began his innings quietly as he took valuable time in the middle ahead of Thursday’s Test at Providence.
Deonarine was 10 away from his fifty when he was removed by Ajmal at 161-3 while Leon Johnson, one of three batsmen in the Guyana side with West Indies senior team experience, edged left-arm pacer Wahab Riaz to the Keeper after making 15 to leave the score on 184-4.
By Tea Chanderpaul, controversially left out of the ODI series, was on 24 and National Opener Richard Ramdeen on four.
Ramdeen (25) was bowled after the break by left-arm spinner Abdur Rehman at 239-3 before Chanderpaul, who showed glimpses of his class with a magnificently timed straight driven boundary off Umar Gul, was bowled by left-arm pacer Junaid Khan for 44 with five fours. Chanderpaul, who began his illustrious Test career on the very ground against England 17 years ago, batted for 18 minutes short of three hours and faced 113 balls in his first competitive match since he played against Pakistan in March in the World Cup.
Gajanand Singh (3) and Derwin Christian (3) were at the crease when rain ended the contest. Ajmal finished with 2-41 for Pakistan who last played a Test match in Guyana 11 years ago.
