Antigua & Barbuda, which became an active member of the Caribbean Rifle Shooting family some six years ago will make their debut as a host of the Prestigious Caribbean Rifle Shooting Championship set for May 1 – 8.
Only the Short Range Championship will be contested since the host nation does not have a Long Range facility as yet.
Defending Champions Guyana will be aiming to create history by successfully retaining the
‘Anchor Cup’ which underlines supremacy at the 300, 500 and 600 yards ranges in the Caribbean.
Four Guyanese did well at a Goodwill competition which was hosted by the Antiguans last May 21-23 at their new Shooting Range prior to the start of the 2010 Caribbean Championships which were held at the Paragon Ranges, Barbados.
The team then was led by National Fullbore Captain Mahendra Persaud and included National champion Ransford Goodluck, Ryan Sampson and Lt. Col. Terry Stuart.
The team this time around will be larger unit and will be named shortly ahead of what is expected to be a keen battle for Regional Supremacy.
At the Paragon Ranges (Anchor Cup – Short Range 300, 500, 600 yards) last May, Guyana totaled 1146 points and 79 V-Bulls to win comfortably ahead of fierce rivals Trinidad & Tobago 1115 points 69 V-Bulls followed by host national Barbados 1107 points 65 V-Bulls; Antigua & Barbuda 1107 points 58 V-Bulls and Bermuda bringing up the rear with 999 points and 39 V-Bulls.
Guyana was represented by a 14-member strong team last year and also won the Long Range (Milex Cup) which is contested over the 900 and 1000 Ranges.
The points table at the end of the Long Range competition in 2010: Guyana 741-37; Barbados 678-29; Antigua & Barbuda 670-29; Trinidad & Tobago 652-26; Bermuda 534-16.
